For a season when obedience feels like heat held under the skin.

Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me. For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, “Violence and destruction!” because Yahweh’s word has been made a reproach to me, and a derision, all day. If I say, I will not make mention of him, or speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am weary with holding it in. I can’t.
Jeremiah 20:7–9

You are weary of resisting a word you cannot dismiss. Part of you wants to stop mentioning God because speaking has brought reproach, mockery, or another demand you no longer feel able to bear. Another part remains troubled by the thought of silence. This is not simple reluctance, and it is not hypocrisy to feel divided. Jeremiah speaks from that strained place: the wish to stop speaking against the pressure that refuses to stay quiet.

He describes the word as a fire shut up in his bones, not a decorative flame but a confined heat felt from within. Holding it in does not bring rest; it makes him weary. The image respects your experience: you may be afraid of consequences and still unable to extinguish what has been heard. The word can burn beneath resistance without turning your weariness into a verdict.

The Father calls you his child in Christ; he does not measure your belonging by how easily you speak. The incarnate Son entered public mockery, and the crucified Christ bore reproach without abandoning the Father’s will. The risen Christ now intercedes for people whose obedience is tired, divided, and costly. You need not pretend the fire feels gentle, nor force yourself into a brave performance. Bring the resistance and the burning before him, trusting that Christ’s cross has already met your shame with mercy.

The word can burn beneath resistance without turning your weariness into a verdict.
Prayer

Jesus, I release my need to silence what I fear. Hold me in your mercy while I am weary and divided. Let your Spirit keep me truthful and faithful today. Amen.
