For a wilderness season when hunger makes God’s word feel insufficient.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry afterward. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’ ”

The wilderness leaves the stones unchanged. Jesus is hungry, and the tempter offers him a way to turn stones into bread, making immediate relief the test of his identity. Jesus does not pretend hunger is unreal; he exposes the lie that bread alone can sustain a human life. Life rests more deeply in every word proceeding from God’s mouth.

I often want immediate relief to settle the question of whether God is caring for me. But Jesus’s answer does not despise bread or deny the body’s need. It refuses to let hunger speak the final word. Bread can fill the stomach while the soul still needs every word from God's mouth. In the wilderness, God’s word is not an ornament beside life; it is the source by which life is received and sustained.

This obedience leads toward the cross. The Son who would not use his identity to escape the wilderness later gave his body to suffering and death, bearing the judgment of sinners. His resurrection vindicates the life that cannot be secured by immediate relief. Spiritual dryness may leave the stones still hard and the hunger still present, but Christ has already secured grace for the hungry through his crucified and risen life.

Prayer

Father, in this wilderness, meet our hunger with the word that proceeds out of your mouth. Keep us from demanding bread as proof that we are your children, and receive us through the crucified and risen Jesus. Thank you for grace that sustains us when we are hungry.
