For the season when faithful service remains but affection for Christ has cooled.

Christ addresses a church whose lampstand still stands among visible labor. Their works, toil, perseverance, discernment, and endurance are real; none of them are dismissed. Yet a lampstand can remain in place while first love quietly cools. Faithful works can remain while first love quietly leaves the lampstand. The danger is not open rebellion but a life that still bears Christ’s name while affection for Christ has become secondary.

I can defend the truth, endure costly service, and still leave my first love behind. The Lord’s diagnosis refuses both flattery and despair: he praises what is faithful, then names what is missing. “Remember from where you have fallen” calls for honest attention to the place of departure, not sentimental longing for an earlier feeling. “Repent” means turning back toward the Lord himself, and “do the first works” means love must return to embodied obedience. The command is not a demand to manufacture warmth, but an invitation to bring cooled devotion into the light.

Christ makes this return possible because his love did not cool when ours did. At the cross, he bore the judgment deserved by loveless service and divided affection; in his resurrection, he lives as the Lord who can restore what has drifted. The first works do not purchase his welcome. They are the fruit of grace received from the crucified and risen Christ, who keeps his people from being abandoned to their own coldness.
