Daily devotional | Temptation and obedience

After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.” But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand. No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside. She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

Joseph’s garment was left behind when he ran outside. What would you keep if obedience cost you your sense of control or reputation? He did not negotiate with the invitation. He refused it, named it great wickedness, and when the room became dangerous, he left what temptation could hold.

The private invitation exposes your actual refuge: secrecy. You imagine an unseen choice will remain small, manageable because no one else knows. But the passage keeps God in view: Joseph asks how he could sin against God, even when the household is empty. Temptation does not need a public stage; your heart still stands before the Lord.

Christ does more than applaud Joseph’s escape. At the cross, he bears the guilt of the secret sin you have entertained, not merely the sin others can name. By his indwelling Spirit, he gives you a present refusal—not a promise that fleeing will cost nothing, but a new allegiance stronger than the invitation. Sometimes faithfulness looks like an empty hand and an open door.
