For the season when grace must govern a body still vulnerable to sin.

Romans 6 sets before us a throne that sin still reaches for, though it no longer owns the crown. “Consider yourselves” means Scripture calls us to reckon with a decisive reality: dead to sin, alive to God in Christ Jesus. The old ruler may shout through bodily lusts, but the throne has changed hands. Grace does not merely evict sin from the throne; it seats the risen Christ over a life made alive.

Therefore, the command is neither denial nor self-salvation. Do not let sin reign in your mortal body; do not obey its lusts or present your members to it as instruments of unrighteousness. I confess that I often call a familiar desire unavoidable when Scripture names it a claimant to dominion. The honest question is not whether temptation speaks, but whether the body will be presented to that voice. Under grace, refusal is a response to a new lordship: present yourselves to God as alive from the dead, and let every member answer to righteousness.

This new lordship rests on Christ, not the strength of the presented life. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our sin deserved; in his resurrection, he entered the life Romans commands us to count as ours in him. Thus “sin will not have dominion” is grace’s verdict before it becomes our daily resistance. We do not earn freedom by refusing sin; we refuse because Christ’s death has broken sin’s claim and his risen life has brought us alive to God.
