For the hour when desire for God and the pull of sin collide.

I find then the law that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present. For I delight in God’s law after the inward man, but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.
Romans 7:21–25

The divided self is exhausting you: one part of you truly desires the good, while another impulse rises inside the same body and pulls toward what you hate. You are not confused about the difference. You recognize the conflict, and that recognition can become shame when failure seems to prove that your desire for God was false. Romans 7 does not soften the misery: evil is present, and the war in the members makes captivity feel bodily, close, and repeated.

Stay with the verse’s stark room: mind and members are not distant territories. The war is under your skin. One law has been welcomed inwardly; another presses through appetite and practiced reflex, as though a captor has found the doors of the body and learned its routes by heart. The cry of a wretched man is not theatrical despair. It is the honest sound of someone who cannot manufacture freedom from inside the prison he is naming.

Yet Paul does not leave the cry hanging in the dark. The question of who will deliver receives a person, not a technique: Jesus Christ, our Lord. The crucified and risen Christ does not despise the divided sufferer; he rescues those who cannot make their inward desire victorious by force. The divided self’s truest act is to cry out for Jesus Christ, the Deliverer. The Father calls you to come as one who needs rescue, not as one who has already mastered the war. Your conflict is grievous, but it is not beyond Christ’s mercy or his lordship.

The divided self’s truest act is to cry out for Jesus Christ, the Deliverer.
Prayer

Jesus Christ, I cannot free myself from this war. Have mercy on my divided heart. Through your cross and risen life, deliver me from self-reliance, and teach me to trust you today. Amen.
