“Create in me a clean heart” asks more than relief from temptation. What part of you wants forgiveness without renewal? You may dislike the stain’s visibility while protecting the appetite that made it. A polished exterior cannot give you a steadfast heart.

Psalm 51 asks God to cleanse, renew a right spirit, and uphold a willing spirit. Your false refuge is self-control: a clenched fist pretending it can keep the heart faithful. It cannot. Sin bends desire, and shame then tells you to hide from God’s presence.

Christ does not merely inspect the stained bowl. At the cross, he bears the guilt that makes cleansing necessary; risen, he intercedes for the guilty and gives access to the Father. His indwelling Spirit is not a reward for your stability. The plea for a willing spirit rests on mercy already given. “A steadfast heart is received before it is practiced.” Ask for joy rooted in salvation, then bring the next temptation into the light.
