For the tired heart that wants a clear next step.

Your heart may feel less like a sanctuary than a spring you must keep checking: what has entered it, what is feeding it, and what it is beginning to send outward. That vigilance can become exhausting, especially when one careless desire seems able to color the whole day. Proverbs does not shame this attention. It calls you to keep the inner spring with diligence because your life flows from there; the command takes your vulnerability seriously.

The verse then brings the guard to the mouth and the eyes. A crooked word may rehearse a crooked desire, while a restless gaze keeps offering the heart new side roads. Look straight ahead; fix your gaze before you. This is not a demand to feel pure before you move. It is a small, embodied refusal: close the conversation, turn off the screen, tell the truth, and let your eyes return to what is in front of you. The straightening often begins in such plain choices.

Then the feet receive their direction: make the path level, establish your ways, do not drift right or left, remove your foot from evil. You may still feel the pull while taking the next faithful step. Jesus says his people belong to him, and his cross meets the guilt that follows a failure. The risen Christ intercedes for the tempted, so guarding your heart is not solitary self-rescue. A straight path can begin with one honest foot lifted from evil.
