For the season when faithful work is visible and the heart fears being mistaken for the light.

Sometimes the hardest part of faithful work is not doing it but allowing it to be seen. Visibility can stir an old fear that recognition will expose vanity, or an old hunger that recognition will finally prove your worth. Both fears keep the heart turned toward the self. You may be doing good work and still feel uneasy when people notice it.

The picture Jesus gives is plain and physical: a lamp lifted from beneath a measuring basket and set on a stand, its small flame reaching the room. A city on a hill does not make itself useful by disappearing. The light is visible so that people may see the good works and glorify the Father. Good work can be seen without becoming a claim on the glory. The point of visibility is direction: eyes may travel through the work toward the Father whose glory is the aim.

Jesus says you are light in the world, not because your work makes you worthy, but because he has named your place within his witness. So receive notice without feeding on it, and accept obscurity without treating it as rejection. The crucified and risen Jesus is your specific grace: your value rests in his finished mercy, while your visible work may become a window through which praise moves beyond you. There is no need to hide the lamp or worship its brightness.
