For the worker whose name is missed but whose calling is not.
Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.” He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a handsome face and good appearance. Yahweh said, “Arise! Anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the middle of his brothers. Then Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
The family has gathered, yet the youngest remains with the sheep. His absence is treated as obvious. Your workplace may do the same: useful enough to carry the unnoticed load, absent when names are called. Are you treating obscurity as proof that your work has no calling?
Your pain is real, but your refuge may be false. You may measure vocation by invitations, applause, or a larger title. Being overlooked cannot erase Christ’s call to faithful service. The overlooked worker is not disqualified by a field others forgot to search.
In the passage, the summons reaches the field, the oil reaches the overlooked brother, and the Spirit comes upon him. In Christ, the cross meets your hunger to be recognized, and the risen Lord gives his indwelling Spirit for obedience where your work remains hidden. This grace does not promise promotion. It gives you Christ himself. Will you enter today’s field without making recognition your refuge?
Being overlooked cannot erase Christ’s call to faithful service.
Lord Jesus, expose my hunger for notice, and by your indwelling Spirit make me faithful in the work before me.
