Daniel’s excellence is pictured as a work file opened under inspection: its pages show capable service, and its margins contain no hidden alteration. He is distinguished above rivals because an excellent spirit is in him; the king’s confidence follows visible excellence, not self-advertisement. Yet the story refuses to separate competence from character. The same work that attracts promotion becomes the place where enemies search for fault.

That search exposes the pressure inside faithful work. Those seeking occasion cannot find an error or fault in Daniel’s administration, so they look toward the law of his God. Integrity is not a polished reputation manufactured for advancement; it is faithfulness that remains whole when hostile eyes inspect the file. Excellent work stands clean when integrity is tested in public. I confess that I often want excellent results without the costly exposure of being known as faithful. Daniel’s example diagnoses a divided ambition: wanting commendation from the king while keeping God’s claim negotiable.

But Daniel is not finally our savior, and his clean record cannot cover ours. At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment deserved by our errors and faults; in his resurrection, he secured acceptance for sinners who cannot present an unaltered record. From that grace, excellent work may become grateful service rather than a bid for worth. Christ does not excuse crookedness; he forgives it, then makes integrity possible as we belong to him.
